April Nisan Ilkmen, Ph. D., LMFT is the Clinical Training Director and Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Ilkmen’s teaching and clinical interests are related to attachment in romantic relationships and issues of social justice in the field of psychotherapy. Dr. Ilkmen grew up in Turkey, has lived in Canada, and now resides in the U.S. Her immigration experience, and multi-cultural background allowed her to become a culturally sensitive clinician and professor. Dr. Ilkmen graduated from the Lycée Saint Michel (established in 1886) located in Istanbul, and received her International Baccalaureate diploma. Upon her graduation, she moved to Canada to pursue her studies. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and French Literature at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Ilkmen received both her masters and Ph.D. degrees from Adler University in Chicago, Illinois. She is currently a psychoanalytic candidate at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.

She brings attention to the ways in which society shapes who we are, and  welcomes clients of all identities, backgrounds and dimensions of culture. She practices in Turkish, French and English.
